Retired colonel calls in bank bomb threat
A retired army colonel attempted to obtain 200,000 euros from a National Bank branch in Ioannina, northern Greece, by threatening to blow it up, police said yesterday. The pensioner called the bank and said he had placed an explosive device at the main entrance which he would detonate with a remote-control device if he was not given the money. An undercover police officer pretending to be the branch’s deputy manager then met with the suspect, to hand over the money, when police arrested him. The unidentified suspect told police that he had resorted to the action as a means of solving his financial problems. Bomb experts then conducted a controlled explosion of the parcel which did not contain any explosive material.
