Five parking garages for Metro commuters

Metro commuters will have 2,300 more parking spaces by mid-2004, according to an ambitious plan announced yesterday for five parking garages at the Metro stations at Syngrou-Fix, Stavros, Doukisis Plakentias, Aegaleo (Aghios Savvas) and Kerameikos (on the corner of Pireos Avenue and the Iera Odos). Attiko Metro president, Yiannis Chrysikopoulos, said commuters would be encouraged to leave their cars at home, because of the construction of public transport transfer points at the Fix and Stavros stations. The Fix transfer point contract, budgeted at 12,457 million euros (4,245 billion drachmas) and scheduled for completion by the AEGEK-EKTER-METON consortium within 25 months, is to be signed today after a two-year delay. The six-floor underground area will have parking spaces for 660 vehicles with a limited number of shops on the first underground level, along with direct underground links to the existing metro station, and access for people with disabilities. A 2,300-square-meter park will be built at surface level
