Did drug squad cops dip into coke haul?

An internal investigation has been launched into the conduct of 18 drugs squad officers after a prosecutor who accompanied them on a major cocaine bust accused at least two policemen of trying to steal some of the seized drugs. Police sources yesterday said the internal affairs squad is handling the case, following a complaint from prosecutor Irene Skeparnia to Attica security police chief Vassilios Tsiatouras. Skeparnia was present at the raid, last Thursday, on a flat in Anavyssos, southern Attica, that took place after a tipoff that the resident – whose name was not made public – was involved in cocaine-trafficking. An investigation of the apartment revealed a parcel containing 1.1 kilos of the drug. The search having ended, Skeparnia was about to leave the flat with the policemen, when she noticed that two officers had lagged behind with the cocaine. She went to investigate and found they had opened the parcel and were rummaging through it. According to police sources, a public prosecutor is investigating the possibility of charging two officers.
