No clean getaway in bank job
The robbery itself was a success, with the armed man making off with 30,000 euros from a Eurobank branch in Haidari, western Attica, yesterday morning. Things went awry when he chose a sewage truck as his getaway vehicle. The robber ran out of the bank and leapt into the far-from-unobtrusive truck which he had parked nearby. An off-duty policeman, who was in the bank at the time, ran after him and noted down the vehicle’s license plate. A short while later, patrol cars and police motorcyclists surrounded the truck at a roadblock at Aspropyrgos, on the highway toward Corinth. A search of the truck’s cab turned up the stolen money and the weapon – which turned out to be fake. Driver Nikos Karagiules, 40, confessed to the crime, saying that he had been driven to it by economic pressures. Police are looking into whether Karagiules has been involved in other robberies. They consider him a suspect in a robbery at the same branch in January.
