A passerby looks at red paint splashed by vandals on the sidewalk and wreaths at Thessaloniki’s Holocaust memorial yesterday, just two days after a ceremony in memory of the 50,000 local Jews killed by the Nazis. Thessaloniki’s Jewish community noted ‘this sacrilege is the result of the heavy atmosphere caused by the latest crisis in the Middle East.’ It said that this provided an excuse for ‘a section of the Greek media’ to ‘degrade’ the Holocaust. Three gravestones were also damaged in Ioannina’s Jewish cemetery.
