Quarry rocks rain on home
Rocks propelled by an explosion that allegedly occurred at a quarry east of Athens supposed to have closed earlier this month caused damage to a house more than a kilometer away and prompted concern that the site is operating illegally. The Lambropoulou family from Markopoulo revealed yesterday that they were sitting on their veranda at home on Wednesday night when they heard a loud explosion and two large rocks landed on their house, causing damage to the roof, a wall and slightly injuring one person. The explosion was so powerful that people who were sitting along Porto Rafti beach a few kilometers away reported an earthquake. Representatives of the quarry firm deny there was any explosion but locals claim that despite officials from the Eastern Attica Prefecture closing down the site 10 days ago, quarrying is still taking place.
