US may waive visas this year

Washington is likely to drop a restriction requiring Greek citizens to obtain a visa before visiting the United States by the end of the year, according to a government source. News of the likely change emerged on Friday when US Department of Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Michael Jackson met with a senior Greek diplomat on the issue, the source said. A team of US state officials is expected to arrive in Athens in the next few weeks regarding the visa requirement. Washington has expressed its intention to meet Athens’s longstanding demand but has not previously outlined when this may take place. Greece last year introduced new passports, which contain microchips and stricter photo requirements, in a bid to improve passport security.
