Smaller parties get a boost
A number of the country’s smaller political parties may have failed to obtain a seat in Parliament after Sunday’s elections but managed to gather 3 percent of total votes between them. The Green Ecologists were among the biggest winners, gathering 1.05 percent of votes, or support from 75,350 voters, following the devastating fires that hit Greece this summer. «We are very satisfied. Even though we were isolated by the press… we did very well by promoting our vision,» Green Ecologist MP candidate Leonidas Tsirigoulis told Kathimerini. Another smaller party to receive a boost was the United Anti-Capitalist Left (Enantia) which received 10,580 votes. On the other hand, Democratic Revival, headed by ex-minister Stelios Papathemelis, disappointed by gathering just 0.8 percent of votes. The party which gained the least support was Regional Urban Development with 18 votes. «I was in my village in Ileia trying to save my house from the flames. I did not have time to organize my election policy,» said the party’s president, Nikos Kolitisis.
