Help offered to Ileia women
More than 300 women visited mobile support units that were sent last week to the fire-stricken area of Ileia in the Peloponnese to provide local women with psychological help and advice on how to revive their businesses. Poly Katsargyri, one of the specialists that accompanied the support units organized by the General Secretariat for Equality, told Kathimerini yesterday that many of the women were suffering because the fires had destroyed their means of income. «Most of the women in the fire-ravaged areas worked in the fields,» she said. «That is what they lived off before the fires.» A 60-year-old woman cannot wait 10 years for new olive trees to grow and bear fruit,» said Katsargyri. «But there are solutions, such as the formation of women’s cooperatives to manufacture and sell traditional products, the development of guest houses and so on.»
