FATAL CRASH
Three people killed in car accident near Lagonissi, southeast of Athens Three people were killed, including a 9-year-old girl, in a car accident on the Athens-Sounion highway near Lagonissi, police said yesterday. The accident, which took place late on Sunday night, occurred when one of the cars slammed into an oncoming vehicle before spinning out of control and bursting into flames. The two other people killed in the accident were unidentified men, while another two people were injured, authorities added. ILEIA BLAZE Fire-stricken area hit again Firefighters were last night battling a wildfire in Ancient Ilida in the fire-stricken region of Ileia, in the Peloponnese. The fire started in an area of low vegetation at around 4.40 p.m. Some 25 firefighters and nine fire engines were involved in the effort to put out the blaze. The fire service said last night that it was confident that the blaze would be brought under control. Meanwhile, a fire in Kastoria, northern Greece, had last night burned a hectare of forestland after crossing the Greek-Albanian border. Olympic torch Members of the Greek Olympic Committee and organizers of the Beijing Olympics signed an agreement in Athens yesterday for the torch relay that will take place before next year’s Games in China. The torch will travel 137,000 kilometers through 135 cities in 130 days before arriving in Beijing on August 8. It will be carried by 21,780 torchbearers. The lighting of the flame is due to take place at Ancient Olympia on March 25 before the torch is carried to Athens, where it will be handed to a Chinese representative on March 30.
