Serres couple caught for spare parts scam
A married couple has been arrested in Serres, northern Greece, on suspicion of defrauding around 50 local residents in the last four months by taking deposits for the sale of used cars or spare vehicle parts and then disappearing. The 41-year-old man and his wife, 44, made some 25,000 euros from the scam, police said on Saturday after seizing two bank paying-in books, five cash cards and three mobile phones from their home. The couple allegedly ran the scam by advertising cars and parts for sale. They would then ask prospective customers to deposit up to 1,000 euros in a bank account for the deal to go ahead. Once the cash appeared in their account, they would disappear. According to police, the pair used pay-as-you-go mobile phone cards to contact would-be customers, dispensing of the cards after receiving money so the victims were left with no way to reach them.
