Seven die in highway car crash
Seven people were killed in a crash on the Athens-Thessaloniki national road near Thebes on Saturday after a car carrying three people crashed through the dividing barrier and collided head-on with another vehicle. Traffic police said it was not immediately clear what caused the car, being driven by a 48-year-old man, to veer onto the other side of the highway but the vehicle was believed to have been traveling at very high speed. The force of the impact was so strong that it took officers several hours to establish exactly how many people were killed in the crash. Police had to close the national road in the direction toward Athens for several hours so they could examine the scene of the accident and remove the bodies from the wreckage. The bodies were taken to two nearby hospitals for formal identification. Authorities did not release any more details about the victims until last night. The victims were aged between 11 and 48. The 48-year-old man had his wife and daughter in the car. The other vehicle was being driven by a 28-year-old who was accompanied by his mother and two aunts.
