A meeting place for the exchange of ideas
I think theater is a place where people meet to exchange ideas. The theater is a forum for ideas. For me it’s important to have something lively in the theater. Like at a rock opera, where people get together to enjoy something live. It’s completely different from going to the drive-in to see a film or staying home to watch TV or going to the cinema. The theater is a crossroads of the arts. That’s what is interesting about it. The Latin root of the word «work» is opus, opera. It’s got everything: music, poetry, philosophy and dance. In the West in recent centuries, every art has had a separate role. Opera meant emotional and intellectual communication, dance meant ballet, theater meant ways of expressing more complex thoughts. I think I’m on the side of the Latin meaning, which contains everything: architecture, sculpture, painting. Remember that I’ve studied architecture and done painting; I’ve been very close to dance and movement and I’ve worked in video and cinema. We talk too easily about the end of painting or dance. There will always be people who paint, who write poetry, who dance. I’ve said it before, that all the avant-garde does is rediscover the classics.
