President Karolos Papoulias addresses a conference on European-Mediterranean economic cooperation in Vouliagmeni, southern Athens, yesterday. Papoulias took the opportunity to call for ‘decent pensions’ and a redistribution of wealth. ‘There must be a fairer distribution so that the reasonable demand of a minimum income and decent pensions for everyone can be satisfied,’ the president said. The functioning of the market should not be the only concern, he said. ‘If the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, we will have social upheaval,’ he remarked.
