Protection urged for Attica’s mountains
A group of concerned citizens who are worried that mountains in Attica will succumb to developers made their campaign public yesterday in the hope of drawing more attention to the problem following the wildfires this summer. The group highlighted the possible expansion of the casino on Mount Parnitha, northeast of Athens, as well as other commercial interests as being of particular concern. A forest fire burned some 5,000 hectares of land there this summer. Mount Pendeli is also under threat from illegal construction and developers, the group said. Only 43 percent of the land on Mount Hymettus, northeast of the city, is in public hands. The rest is being claimed by various interests, including municipalities, according to the group.
