In central Athens…

Students throw fliers into the air next to the Hotel Grande Bretagne in central Athens yesterday during a protest against plans for tertiary education reform. Some 1,500 students took part in the rally, which was organized by a Communist Party-affiliated student group. Riot police prevented the crowd from marching to the offices of the European Union on Vassilissis Sofias Avenue. The protest, the first of this academic year, ended peacefully.
