Rogue officer in bank heist
A policeman was arrested in Thessaloniki yesterday accused of taking part in a bank robbery along with two other suspects in a million-euro heist. Police said their colleague, identified as Vassilis Meliopoulos, held up a branch of Alpha Bank around midday before firing several shots in the air and tying up two security guards on duty. The assailants, however, forgot about a third guard on duty who chased after the rogue police officer and managed to detain him. Meliopoulos, serving at a police station in Veria, northern Greece, is currently being investigated by Internal Affairs in connection wtih a forged identity card racket. Police said they have launched a manhunt for the other two men that took part in the heist. There were no reports of injuries.
