TVX-Gold acknowledges using product that leads to heavy metal pollution

The company TVX-Gold acknowledges that the compressed arsenopyrite produces toxic acid drainage with high concentrations of heavy metals. It is estimated that 12 million tons of waste have ended up along the coast, causing considerable damage to marine fauna and flora. The pollution in the area is particularly high and the damage irreversible. Measurements have revealed high concentrations of arsenic, lead, zinc and antimony many times higher than the permissible rates. The quality of the water in 23 boreholes in the area and ground water at Kokkinolakka have also been affected.
