Notice to Skopje
Would you support a composite name for FYROM? Our criteria for the decisions we make will be solely that of securing our national interests. We won’t tolerate Skopje not meeting its obligation for a mutually agreeable name. The government of Costas Karamanlis bears a grave responsibility. It bears exclusive responsibility for weakening Greece’s negotiating position and power and allowing Skopje’s intransigence. It was very slow to act and then did so only under pressure. I’m afraid that any result and proposal will be less than what Greece could achieve. We won’t let the ND government off its responsibility, to seek fellow culprits in failure or try to shift the blame for crucial decisions onto the Greek people. We did not give the government a blank check. We will observe closely how the negotiations go. We’ll wait and carefully scrutinize the proposals, especially the fine print.
