Seven kilos of cocaine tucked under coffee

A man and a woman were arrested at Athens International Airport for possession of 7 kilos of cocaine, with a street value of up to 588,000 euros. Police said yesterday the two suspects, both Bulgarian nationals, had covered the drugs in their suitcases with coffee beans in a bid to escape the detection of sniffer dogs. Interpol had tipped off police to a large drug shipment moving from Latin America, leading airport authorities to double-check passengers and luggage that originated from there. In a statement, police indicated the two suspects had begun their travels in Latin America before arriving in Europe. According to the police drug squad, the street value of the drugs could tally 330,000 euros as a bulk purchase or as much as 588,000 euros if sold in smaller units.
