Million-euro thieves caught

Six people have been arrested and another three are being sought for the theft of jewelry worth 1 million euros from a couple in Thessaloniki earlier this year, the police said yesterday. Four members of the group have been accused of impersonating police officers to stop a car being driven by a 57-year-old jeweler in April. After stopping the vehicle, they allegedly assaulted their victim and his wife before stealing six bags containing the jewels as well as 11,000 euros in cash. The gang also slashed the car’s tires so that the jeweler, who was not named, could not chase the fake patrol car in which they made their escape. The 57-year-old was on his way back from showing the jewelry to a colleague near Kilkis. Police said that the jeweler in Polykastro is being treated as a suspect. None of the suspects was named but officers said that they are all Greek and were known to authorities. The six suspects in custody are due to face a magistrate today.
