Afghans protest in Patras after beating

A group of some 250 Afghan immigrants and leftists besieged a ferry at the port of Patras yesterday, throwing stones and preventing passengers from boarding, claiming that an Afghan national had been beaten by a crew member and a truck driver. The unrest began after a group of Afghans claimed that a fellow national had been attacked for trying to board the Lefka Ori illegally. The crowd grew, swelled by members of local leftist groups, and blocked the entrance to the ship. Some of the protesters threw stones, damaging cars that had already boarded the ferry. No passengers were injured. Authorities escorted a delegation of Afghans onto the ship to seek the perpetrators but they failed to find anyone. The beaten Afghan was hospitalized but the extent of his injuries was unclear.
