Student leaps to his death

An Athens university student plummeted to his death yesterday after falling from the fifth floor of a campus building in what police said was a suicide. Authorities said the unidentified student, aged 29, was in the Athens University law school along with some of his peers at 5.20 p.m. when he climbed out of the window and jumped. He is believed to have died instantly. Students informed the rector who in turn called police but they were stopped from entering the area due to a regulation that prohibits law enforcers from entering university campuses. In order to temporarily lift the ban, an emergency rectors council was immediately convened and approved the entry of police into the tertiary institution. After an initial investigation, police ruled out any criminal involvement in the death, based on eyewitness accounts provided by six students who were nearby when the incident took place.
