Air force officers are seen yesterday carrying the body of a 35-year-old pilot who was killed on Wednesday when his F-16 fighter jet crashed into the Aegean Sea some 30 kilometers south of Mount Athos in northern Greece. His funeral took place yesterday in Katerini, northern Greece. Authorities believe the crash that killed Flight Lieutenant Athanassios Batsaras, who had 1,500 hours’ flight time, was due to human error. He had been on a routine nighttime exercise and may have suffered vertigo, or disorientation, where pilots confuse the sky and the sea. Batsaras’s body was found by a Turkish frigate.
