Police smash elusive gang

Police believe they have smashed a large criminal gang that was sought in connection to breaking into homes and offices in Athens, forcing a woman into prostitution, drug smuggling and car theft. Five Albanian nationals, including one woman, were arrested for at least 10 counts of breaking into homes and offices since the middle of October. Police described the gang’s operations as being very well organized as they alternated each person’s role in each holdup as a means of avoiding detection. Apart from finding in their possession stolen jewelry and electrical equipment, police also found 18 kilos of cannabis. Authorities have launched a manhunt for more members of the gang, which is believed to have sold the stolen cars for 1,000 to 1,500 euros each. One of the suspects confessed to police that he had forced an 18-year-old female who was staying at his home into working as a prostitute.
