Casino cash safe after heisters’ gamble fails
Three armed robbers opened fire on a security van carrying cash from the Mont Parnes casino on Monday afternoon but fled the scene empty-handed, police said yesterday. The armored vehicle was descending Mount Parnitha, northwest of Athens, when the would-be thieves started shooting at it. However, they did not manage to stop the truck. Instead, they made off in a getaway car, which was later found near the scene of the shooting. The three suspects were still at large last night. This time of year is traditionally a peak time for gambling in Greece so the security truck could have been carrying a significant amount of cash. A raid on a similar vehicle in September last year netted some 1.6 million euros.
