The Maliakos Gulf…

Cars were backed up for a number of kilometers at the Maliakos Gulf, near Lamia in central Greece, yesterday as holidaymakers headed back to Athens after the Christmas break during which 25 people were killed in crashes. A number of police officers were on hand to help by diverting cars to an alternative route, however, traffic had slowed to a halt at around 4.30 p.m. due to construction work taking place on the national highway. Authorities said fog made conditions even more difficult for drivers.
