Man dips hand in till to pay for casino spree

A 38-year-old male employee working at a gas station in Thessaloniki reported a fake robbery to police to cover up for money he had stolen and gambled away, authorities said on Saturday. The man called police and his employer and claimed that two armed men had held up the service station during his shift and made away with 2,700 euros in cash. He gave detailed descriptions of the two suspects but police become suspicious when he started to contradict himself in testimony. The police arrested the man after further questioning in which he confessed to taking the cash himself and gambling it away at a casino. The suspect then told police where he had hidden the rest of the stolen cash, some 1,500 euros, in an area near the gas station.
