Fireworks explode over the Acropolis as Athens ushers in 2008. The fireworks were part of the New Year celebrations organized by the City of Athens, which included a free music concert in Kotzia Square. Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis spoke to revelers before midnight and encouraged them to be more environmentally aware. His speech slightly overran the stroke of midnight. The first event recorded by police in Athens was a firebomb attack on a branch of Geniki Bank in Kypseli. Nobody was hurt but the entrance was damaged slightly.
