Lawyer, convict held for violating furlough
An Athenian lawyer and her companion, a convicted robber, were arrested coming out of a nightclub in Thessaloniki early yesterday on charges of the convict violating the terms of his five-day furlough. The two were detained and will appear before an investigating magistrate today. Four others are accused of harboring a fugitive. Giorgos Angelopoulos, due to return to Athens’s Korydallos Prison on April 22, instead sent a telegram to a prosecutor claiming that «it is clear from the criminal behavior of the police… that I will be killed when I am arrested.» Angelopoulos has been in the news since his lawyer, Aida Tzavella, declared on television that she and the convicted felon were in love. She has since alleged that Korydallos’s chief warder, Antonis Aravantinos, is involved in drug smuggling and the mistreatment of prisoners, in an explanation Angelopoulos’s qualms over returning to prison.
