Kinky Kong

It started out as Kinky, a funky little bar downtown. Later, Kong was added next door to make Kinky Kong. Created by two actors, Olga Maneta and Yiannis Voulgarakis, who wanted to put their own stamp on a place for their own group and other activities, theater and music groups, without sponsors and advertisements for alcohol. «We’re not interested in that scene,» said Maneta. «Our only strength will be our audience.» Kinky Kong rapidly became a meeting point for the most demanding audience. Small is beautiful, in this case in space which at first seems limiting. Yet the stage is adapted according to the needs of each event and performance. Last year’s success, «Ekskafi kenou» (Excavation of a Gap), is being repeated this year with some changes. Written by Ioanna Remediaki, the play converses with the audience, who are surrounded by three actors: a contemporary couple and a DJ-narrator, who introduces the audience to the labor of slaves in the quarries of Paros in antiquity, which produced the marble used in some of the masterpieces of classical Athens. In tandem with that, the couple are at a critical stage and have to dig deep to find their own «precious marble.» «What would happen if they had no defenses?» asks the DJ, urging the couple to dance to a bossa nova composed by Michalis Delta for the play. «We live in a quarry but we don’t know it,» commented Remediaki. A stimulating concept effectively performed. Kinky Kong, 68 Avramiotou Street, Monastiraki.
