Ex-officer charged with detaining illegals

A former police officer was arrested in Athens for allegedly charging illegal immigrants from Algeria between 3 and 5 euros a day for accommodation at a community center, authorities said yesterday. The suspect, who is an official with the Greek-African Friendship Association, charged about 20 illegal migrants to stay at the association’s accommodation facilities. He would lock up the facilities each night so that no one could enter the rooms without paying, which in effect imprisoned the others, said a police source. The ex-police officer had been arrested about three-and-a-half years ago for his alleged involvement in a bank robbery, authorities added. The man has been charged with illegally detaining people and assisting illegal immigrants to stay in the country.
