Heavy traffic and port smog a problem
A significant source of pollution is the heavy traffic in the town center and the main highway arteries. Delays might be negligible compared to what drivers suffer in Athens, but pollution levels are high. A citizens’ group has asked for more public transport and bicycle lanes, and there is much debate over the construction of new parking garages so as not to draw too many cars into the center. Meanwhile, scrap metal is still being unloaded in bulk in the port, only a stone’s throw from residential areas. The problem is not only one of aesthetics, the heaps of metal release micro-particles and therefore should be stored in enclosed areas.
