Police smash ecstasy ring

Two Albanians arrested in Athens yesterday with more than 5,000 ecstasy tablets in their possession are believed to be members of a ring importing synthetic «party» drugs, such as ecstasy and methamphetamine, from illegal factories in Bulgaria. The men, aged 24 and 26, are believed to have procured the drugs in the Albanian port of Fieri. The drugs were discovered at the Galatsi home of the younger man who, police say, had been present during an armed raid last October on an apartment in Omonia which resulted in two deaths, that of a 31-year-old drug dealer and a woman, 44. Police in Athens said they were surprised at yesterday’s haul. «We thought there had been a dip in the trade and use of synthetic drugs but it appears that the smuggling rings are bringing them back on the market ahead of the Easter holidays,» a narcotics squad officer said.
