Athens mayor touts ‘green rooftop’ drive
Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis yesterday called on city dwellers to support a City Hall initiative aimed at making their rooftops and balconies greener to combat rising temperatures and pollution as well as to brighten up the capital. Citizens can learn more by visiting the «Green Rooftops – Blooming Balconies» exhibition taking place at Kotzia Square – instead of the traditional flower show – from today until May 12. Experts will be on hand to advise visitors on how to create roof and balcony gardens without causing damp and structural problems to their building. «We must put in the effort to make our immediate environment greener, healthier and more humane,» Kaklamanis said. City Hall is looking into securing European Union funding for the initiative and is to hold a competition to judge the best balcony and garden.
