Born in 1942, Nikiforos Diamandouros has been European Ombudsman since April 1, 2003. Prior to that he was the first to hold the post of national Ombudsman in Greece. He is on leave from the Political Science and Public Administration Department of Athens University, where he has been a professor of political science since 1993. From 1995 to 1998 he was director of the National Center for Social Research (EKKE). He studied political sciences at the universities of Indiana and Columbia. Before his appointment at Athens University, he taught at the State University of New York and Columbia. He has collaborated with many academic and research foundations in Greece and abroad and has published widely.
