University staff leave hospital amid tensions
The rector of Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University, knocked unconscious during a scuffle with students last Wednesday, and two university guards who were beaten up by a gang of youths two days later, were discharged from the hospital on Saturday as a growing number of academics and students protested the rising tensions in the education sector. According to doctors, rector Anastassios Manthos sustained neck injuries from a blow delivered by a blunt instrument. Manthos was hospitalized with a concussion on Wednesday after dozens of students stormed a university senate meeting to protest education reforms. The union representing the two guards, who suffered a severe beating at the hands of unidentified assailants last Friday, have submitted a petition to Parliament demanding the right to work in safety.
