Athens provides some inspiration for American applicant

Richard M. Daley was in Athens about 18 months ago to see how the Greek capital hosted the 2004 Olympics. «We looked at the facilities and spoke to people with regard to the construction and the operations side of it, as well as the whole idea of getting the Olympics,» the Chicago mayor told Kathimerini English Edition. Daley says he has been impressed by the Athens metro. «One of the greatest improvements in Athens is the subway. That’s amazing. It’s something we are looking at.» The mayor says there are differences in the way Chicago would plan for the Olympics. «Athens had to build from scratch but our system is different. It will be concentrated in the downtown area. We have a metro system and two airports so that compliments us. «Transportation is the key and we already have the infrastructure there so that means we do not have to remodel.»
