Shrewd hound sniffs out big heroin haul

A Hungarian man traveling with his 11-year-old granddaughter and another Hungarian couple have been arrested on the northeastern Aegean island of Chios after some 40 kilos of pure heroin were found in their camper van. Authorities revealed on Saturday that they stopped the vehicle as it disembarked from a ferry that had arrived from Turkey. Officers were alerted to the possibility that there might be drugs in the van when a sniffer dog detected something suspicious under the vehicle. In one of the biggest seizures of its kind in Greece, the customs officials discovered that a secret compartment had been constructed and that the uncut drug was hidden inside. Further details about the suspects were not revealed and it was not clear what would happen to the 11-year-old who was traveling with them.
