Road accident leaves 56 migrants in a daze

A refrigerator truck carrying 56 illegal immigrants overturned near the central town of Larissa yesterday, injuring six migrants and causing the rest to run off in a bid for freedom. Most of the migrants, male Afghans and Pakistanis aged 15-25, disappeared into fields or boarded trains at the nearby railway station of Aerino. Police arrested 21 who did not flee quickly enough. Of these, six were hospitalized with various injuries, the extent of which was not clear. The others were sent to a migrant reception center in Volos. The truck driver, believed to be a Greek, eluded arrest. In a related development, port authorities on the Aegean islet of Farmakonisi intercepted 50 would-be migrants. According to Merchant Marine Ministry data, port authorities detained 5,332 migrants and 104 smugglers in the first six months of this year.
