Job seekers swindled out of 132,000 euros

Three suspected fraudsters swindled 132,000 euros from unemployed residents of Thessaloniki by promising to find them jobs abroad in exchange for an administration fee, police in the northern city said yesterday. According to police, the alleged perpetrators, who are still at large, promised to find jobs for a number of unemployed locals in exchange for a «small fee» which, they claimed, would go toward securing accommodation in the country where the job was to be found. The con artists placed advertisements in the classified sections of local newspapers to convince their victims that they were doing something. But they then disappeared, leaving the would-be job seekers empty-handed. It was unclear yesterday how many people had succumbed to the scam.
