Briton held for killing infant

A 20-year-old British woman was under police guard in a hospital on Crete yesterday after allegedly suffocating her newborn baby to death. The 20-year-old Londoner – identified by Reuters as Leah Andrews – was arrested yesterday at the northern resort of Malia, a popular package tourism destination for Britons, on suspicion of killing her newborn son after giving birth alone in her hotel room. The woman, on the island since last Wednesday with her sister and a friend, was hospitalized on Sunday with excessive bleeding. Police found the dead baby wrapped in a sheet in her room. A coroner said the baby had died of asphyxiation but did not say when. Police on Crete said the 20-year-old is being held «on suspicion of homicide» but has not been formally charged. A British Foreign Office spokesman, cited by the Guardian newspaper, said, «We can confirm a British national was charged with the murder of her baby in Malia, Crete.»
