Library books to move to temporary home

By Olga Sella – Kathimerini The contents of the National Library will be housed at a temporary site until their relocation to the brand-new library at the Faliron Delta, the administration has told Kathimerini. The building in question is a multistory one on Athinon Avenue near the metro’s Metaxourgeio station, and will offer 10,000 square meters of space as well as underground parking, the library’s president, Athanassios Fokas, said. It will be designed by Konstantinos Staikos. Three years ago, before the Niarchos Foundation’s gift had been announced, Fokas spoke to Kathi-merini about the need for the building. «The new building,» he said at the time, «will relieve the present situation. First, we will empty the current storerooms and move the material there, where it will be kept under better conditions. Second, reading rooms with newspapers and magazines will function there. Third, when emptied of books, the eastern wing of the old building will be able to undergo restoration and become a space for hosting events.» Until the contents are relocated to a new building, we will have to tolerate books that are unreachable in their crates, storerooms that become flooded and a general lack of urgency in the operation of one of the country’s most important academic institutions.
