Molyviatis defends fund for fire victims

The head of an emergency fund set up last year to help victims of the devastating forest fires in the Peloponnese and on Evia hit back at critics yesterday, saying that, although there is plenty of work still to do, some 400 million euros has already been spent. «Of course, all the problems have not been solved, not all the damage has been restored and the houses that were burnt have not all been rebuilt. Perhaps it would be impossible for all that to happen in a year,» said Petros Molyviatis, a former foreign minister. There has been criticism, particularly in the Ileia area of the Peloponnese, that the aid has not reached victims. But Molyviatis said that some 200 million euros had gone to people in the area. Just under 1,500 homes were destroyed or damaged by the fires. Molyviatis said that the reconstruction of 397 of them had already begun.
