METRO MAINTENANCE

Late evening delays and platform switches on Line 3 Maintenance on Line 3 of the metro line means that there will be short delays for passengers traveling between Aegaleo and Athens International Airport after 10 p.m. over the next four months, it was announced yesterday. Special equipment has been brought in from Switzerland to carry out the maintenance, which will result in delays of a few minutes as only one track is being used for certain sections. This also means that passengers will on occasion have to get on or off the train on the opposite platform to the one they normally use. HALKIDIKI MURDER Man, 30, arrested on Crete Police said yesterday that they have arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of murdering a woman, also 30, whose badly beaten body was found near the village of Olynthos in Halkidiki, northern Greece, on Sunday. Officers believe that the pair had gone out together and that the man drove the unnamed woman to a remote spot where he assaulted her and hit her over the head with an iron bar. The man, who has also not been named, was arrested on Crete. His 17-year-old nephew is also wanted for questioning. Copper robber One man has been arrested and another is being sought by police after they allegedly stole 1.5 tons of copper and aluminum as well as 2 tons of electrical wire worth 8,000 euros from a store in Hania, Crete. Police said there has been a spate of similar robberies in the area. Hit and run Police in Trikala were yesterday seeking an unidentified motorist who on Monday night struck and fatally injured a 34-year-old resident from a psychiatric institution a few kilometers outside the town in central Greece. The 34-year-old man, who had escaped from the institution earlier on Monday was hit on the stretch of national highway connecting Tripolis to Kalamata. Drug haul Guards at a prison near the Cretan port of Hania were yesterday trying to determine which of their inmates had been due to collect a packet containing about 50 grams of heroin found in the jail’s exercise area on Monday. The packet is believed to have been thrown over the external wall for collection. Boat collision A French-flagged pleasure boat carrying four tourists struck a passenger ferry entering the main port of Syros on Monday night but no one was injured, the Merchant Marine Ministry said. The accident is believed to have occurred when the boat approached the port to dock without having received permission. Dead bear A brown bear found dead at the foot of Mount Askio in northern Greece had been shot, conservationists said yesterday. The 12-year-old male bear, weighing 200 kilos, was found by a rural police officer in the area.
