Athens police accused of beating migrant

A rights group yesterday lodged a complaint against a central Athens police station where an Afghan immigrant is alleged to have been violently beaten last week. According to the Stop the War Coalition, the Afghan was taken in for questioning last week by officers at the Aghios Panteleimonas unit, although it was unclear on what charges. After a couple of days, the migrant reportedly was taken to the hospital with a broken finger and injuries to his head, back and arms. The rights group claims the migrant was then taken back to the same police unit and beaten some more. According to friends who collected him on Tuesday morning after his release, his nose had been bleeding profusely. Officers at the Aghios Panteleimonas station were accused of beating migrants, also Afghans, in December 2004. Similar reports have been filed in the past against officers at the Omonia and Acropolis units.
