Drug smuggler finds arrest hard to swallow
Border guards had suspected for weeks that a man from Serres was smuggling drugs into the country from Bulgaria, but only caught him red-handed over the weekend after checking his tonsils. Officers revealed that the 30-year-old man, who was not named, had been hiding small quantities of heroin in his esophagus in order to escape detection. According to the authorities, their suspicions grew when they noticed the man was crossing over to Bulgaria every day. They began to search him each time he returned, but did not come up with anything until this weekend when they decided to arrest him on suspicion of smuggling drugs. The officers took him to the hospital in Serres, where doctors found the hidden heroin. The suspect then allegedly confessed that he had been transporting the drug this way for the last four months.
