Two wounded in armed raids

The 51-year-old owner of a PROPO betting shop in Athens was yesterday in intensive care at the Evangelismos Hospital after being shot during a robbery in which the assailants made off with 10,000 euros. According to police, two men entered the man’s shop in the neighborhood of Neos Cosmos and attempted to grab the bag which contained the day’s takings. The shopkeeper, who was not named, resisted and one of the robbers shot him in the chest. The suspects then sped off on a motorbike, said authorities, who did not give details of the victim’s condition. A 25-year-old man was also being treated for a light gunshot wound at Evangelismos yesterday after being shot during a raid on a Metro supermarket on the Athens-Lamia highway. The victim tried to confront five suspected robbers, believing that the weapons they were carrying were fakes. One of the suspects shot him during the confrontation before all five escaped in a stolen car with some 6,000 euros in cash.
