Property probe on fast track

The investigation into the controversial land deal involving the Vatopedi Monastery will not be handed over to Parliament, at least for now, as the prosecutor in charge yesterday appointed a third prosecutor to the case to speed up the probe. Kyriakos Karoutsos assigned prosecutor Efstathia Spyropoulou to oversee the investigation with the aim of a «quicker and more complete» conclusion to the probe, which hopes to uncover who was behind the deal that allegedly took place at the expense of taxpayers. PASOK said the appointment of an extra prosecutor smacked of a bid to cover up the affair and accused the government of having influenced the judiciary. New Democracy denied the allegation and said that if the prosecutors find that there is evidence of a politician being involved in the affair, they are bound by law to forward the case to Parliament so it can investigate further.
