Athens Polytechnic…

Children are seen on Saturday laying flowers at a monument to those killed in the student uprising at the Athens Polytechnic on November 17, 1973. The weekend’s commemorative events will culminate in the annual protest march in central Athens today. Some 8,000 policemen will be on duty to ensure that the rally is not marred by violence. There are fears that self-styled anarchists, who often cause trouble at the annual march, may come out in force this year to express solidarity with thousands of prisoners entering their second week of a hunger strike over detention conditions.
